India’s 13th President Pranab Kumar Mukherjee has a meaningful political career for over six decades, earlier holding different senior positions in Indian National Congress party and also in different Ministerial positions, some of them very important at critical periods, immediately  before being chosen as the Presidential candidate he was the Union Finance Minister, when the country was concerned with critical situations in the area of Economic development.

Mukherjee’s entry to Indian Parliament was in 1969 when he joined Rajya Sabha through a Congress ticket, with the support of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, soon to take up important positions in the Party and Parliamentary affairs, becoming the most trusted party member to Indira Gandhi, with his first time getting into her Ministry in 1973 later in important Ministerial positions, while he was the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1985.

When Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984, there was a strong rumor that Mukherjee was to take over as the Prime Minister, which fact caused rift and a kind of grouping within the party, ending up in Rajiv Gandhi, Indira’s son, who took over as the Prime Minister not including him in his Ministry, following which situation Mukherjee left the Congress Party and formed another party with a few followers calling it Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress, however, in 1989, when  he reached a compromise with Rajiv Gandhi, this party merged with the main stream.

Pranab Kumar Mukherjee’s active participation in the Government came back when P V Narasimha Rao took over as the Prime Minister after Rajiv Gandhi, who was unfortunately assassinated by a Srilankan Tamil extremist in 1991, when he was made the Head of Planning Commission in 1991 and again as the Foreign Minister in 1995, later Mukherjee was to play a key role in bringing Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi’s widow, in order to revamp and reorganize the party for gaining better political strength.

When Congress regained the Central Ministry, on formation of UPA, namely United Progressive Alliance, in 2004, during which Election only Mukherjee contested and won the Lok Sabha seat for the first time in his political career, he gained the number two position in the Ministry next only to the Prime Minister, occupying Ministerial positions of Defense in 2004-06, External Affairs in 2006-09 and Finance in 2009-12, while he headed a few Groups of Ministers committees as the Leader of House in the Lok Sabha, until he gave consent for the Presidential candidature, finally to defeat P A Sangma his opponent in Presidential Elections with a sizable majority of 70% of the votes, as he was the Officially nominated candidate of the ruling Government and also popular among various political parties.
